UFC: How a Tournament with Minimal Rules Evolved into a Global Sports Organization

The UFC is an international sports organization specializing in mixed martial arts competitions. Its history began in 1993 in Denver, where the first tournament was held. The initial concept differed significantly from modern competitions: fighters represented various martial arts disciplines, and bouts took place with minimal restrictions and no weight classes.

Following the success of the inaugural tournament, the UFC continued to host events while gradually modifying its rules and format. A pivotal moment came in 2001 when Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta acquired the organization and Dana White became its president. This marked the beginning of the UFC's rapid expansion within the U.S. and internationally. In 2007, the organization acquired its major Japanese rival, Pride Fighting Championships, further solidifying its position on the global stage.

Over time, the UFC evolved into a massive sports platform bringing together fighters across various weight classes. The organization's tournaments attained the status of major sporting events and began to be held regularly outside the United States. Bouts were broadcast in many countries, allowing the UFC to build a vast international audience.

The participants include athletes competing in a wide range of styles and representing various martial arts disciplines.Another significant milestone was the 2023 formation of TKO Group Holdings, which united the UFC and WWE. The merger was finalized on September 12, 2023. Throughout this process, the UFC retained its own organizational structure and continued to host regular events featuring top-tier fighters.
